East Kent Backgammon Tournament – 25th January 2025

40 players attended (19 club members & 21 visitors).
The sun was shining in Canterbury on the 25th January, and even more so for the East Kent Backgammon Club.
For various reasons we have about 12 players drop out in the last week or so before the tournament. After quite a few emails and texts I managed to get a nice even number of 40 players including some new players & some old.

 

The Mains
Once again a number of the masters were knocked out after the 5 round Swiss and only 2 of the East Kent players reached the top 8.
Chris Filby, Mike Ireland, Anna Price and Jonathan Sara lost out in the quarter finals.
Followed by Michael Stansmore & Andrew Hawken being knocked out at the semi finals.
This left 2 of our club members fighting it out in the final. Sadly at this stage there was only one person in the crowd to watch (me). Everyone else had given up and gone home by now.
Congratulations Larry Smyth for winning another Club open tournament. Also well done to Gary Lloyd for 2nd place. Both of these players are really passionate about the game and always a pleasure to play regardless if they win or lose. They both put a lot of time and effort in improving their game and really deserve their rewards today. It’s great to have both of these players within our club.

The Consolation
5  of the players who were eligible for the consolation decided to retire early for the day promoting Rosalie Johnson, Rustem Mustafa, Sean Thomas and Peter Finnimore into the consolation.
The 16 contenders battled it out in a 3pt knockout.
Sean Thomas won the final against Simon Goddard.

We have 3 more tournaments arranged for 2025 and these are open for applications.

So sign up as soon as possible to secure yourself a place.
